La Ceiba
The City
La Ceiba is the third largest city in Honduras with a population of roughly 150,000 inhabitants. While small in size, it is the country's most vibrant city with several festivals dotting its calendar.
La Ceiba got its name from the huge tree that provided shade to dock workers from the Standard Fruit Company, which houses its administrative HQ in the city. La Ceiba has a large English speaking community. International tourists and residents from all over Honduras visit La Ceiba to shop and experience the many festivals and the nightlife.
The Area Attractions
What attracted us to La Ceiba was the possibility of the city becoming the Ecotourism hub of the Caribbean. Its proximity to Pico Bonito Cloud Forest National Park, Cuero y Salgado Wildlife Refuge, and Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve are some mainland attractions just outside the city. Of course, the beautiful Bay Islands offers many opportunities to dive and snorkel alongside their barrier reefs.
The Festivals
La Ceiba is famous for its Carnival week (known locally as Carnaval de la Amistad), which takes place during the Month of May to Celebrate the patron saint San Isidro. Although this event should not be confused with Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro or Mardi Gras in New Orleans, it is undoubtedly the largest and most important celebration held regularly in Central America and the Caribbean.
While people may confuse the May Carnival with Easter celebrations -- ie. Mardi Gras & Carnaval -- La Ceiba is also well known for their Semana Santa celebration in the city. This celebration draws fellow Hondurans from all over the country to take part in a four-day party/celebration.
La Ceiba's newest party -- its Carnival of Love & Friendship -- coincides with Valentines Day and has become a very popular holiday event throughout the Caribbean.
La Ceiba attracts over a quarter million tourists a year during its festivals and other events. La Ceiba is also known for its shopping, low cost of living, and as a popular retirement community for retirees from the US and other nations around the world. Medical care is among the best in the Caribbean. With its mainland coast location and convenient airport, La Ceiba is easily accessed from the rest of the Caribbean.
